Get in the Groove!

Room 10 has started on a new activity for the middle of the day - Zumba!

We have practiced many of songs all with a weird twist to it. Though difficult, everyone seems to be getting into this style of dance.

People seem to be enjoying the song 'On the Floor' by Jennifer Lopez and some have decided to practice the moves at home. We also did other songs like 'Move like Jagger' which people are enjoying also.

We have plans for doing Zumba in front of the school at an assembly, though this is only a possibility. Sharon is determined to get everyone joining in and getting the moves correct. This is certainly an activity for lots of us to get into.

Totaranui...Our way Part 5

What a camp!

Everyone woke up today feeling tired and sore. After getting up and having breakfast, we had to pack up our bivis and load the trailer. Then we all got assigned jobs. People had to help tidy up the kitchen, pack up more gear and four people even had to clean the toilets!

After packing up everything we headed down to the beach to wait for the boat. Since we had lot's of time to waste Phil taught us a game. It is like musical chairs but with sticks. You line up on a line then when someone says go you run up to where some sticks are lined up but there is one less than the amount of people running. Whoever doesn't get a stick is out. The last person left wins. We had a boys round first. While the boys were playing all of the girls had a feast on the leftover baking. All I can say is that after that there was not much baking to take home. Zac won the boys round and Analese won the girls round. They both versed each other and Analese won.

By that time the boat had shown up and we all piled on. On the way the skipper was quite funny by saying that "These long yellow things are called kayaks and are new spices in the park." Along the way we stopped off at lots of places including Awaroa and Bark Bay.

When we got to Kaiteriteri we had lunch and then went home.

What agreat and one that we will treasure forever. We all had some highs and lows and it was also a great oppitunity to get to know our new teacher,Sharon, more.

Five days down. Zero to go!

Totaranui... Our way! Part 3

Today was the walk to Separation Point. We didn't have fitness in the morning as we would be walking most of the day. We packed our bags, and started the walk to Separation Point.

For the start of the track, it was the same route to Anapai, but after our quick drinks break, for the next ten or so minutes we would be walking along beaches.

When we rejoined the track, we were heading for Mutton Cove, about thirty minutes from Separation Point. We stopped at Mutton Coves tree swings, for morning tea break. We also discussed who would go on the long walk or the short walk to Separation Point.

When we got to Separation Point, it was a stunning view. You could see to Farewell Spit all the way round to Golden Bay! We took lots of photos, and then went back to have lunch at Mutton Cove. We stopped for around three hours, then headed back for the homestead. Once again we stopped at Anapai, to re-group. We then headed for the homestead tired but happy to have completed the walk.

Totaranui... Our way! Part 2

"If you beat me back to the homestead, you get a $20 bonus." That made us all run faster. We were running back to the homestead after our morning fitness. Everybody wanted breakfast and $20.

Once everybody got back and had had breakfast and made their lunch, we started walking to Anapai, a bay near Totaranui, and got there in about an hour. When we were there we did 3 rotations, mapping, abseiling and photography.

With mapping, we had to figure out how far in time and kilometers it was to Separation point. The Special Pancakes got the closest time and distance.

With abseiling, we had to walk into the bush until we got to a big rock face. That rock face was the abseiling wall. We walked up to the top of it three at a time. Up the top was the most amazing view. You could see all of Anapai.

When you were going down it seemed to take forever but to the people on the ground you came down really quick. It gave you a great sense of achievement when you reached the bottom.

The photography was basically walking to the next bay to swim and taking pictures on the way.
Everyone had a great time swimming and the photography was fun as well. We all got some great shots of our groups together.

On the whole everyone had a great day. We all had fun and we're liking camp already.

Two days down. Three to go!

House Leaders 2013

What an outstanding bunch of young people! We are blessed to have as our year 8 group in 2013.

This week it has been a privilege to interview and hear speeches from the house leader hopefuls.

Everyone spoke with sincerity, composure and passion.  I was so proud of each and every student who put themselves forward.

It is with pleasure that I announce the following students house leaders and deputies for Mapua School in 2013.

Blue House:        Leader - Stella Stevens
                            Deputy - Jake Williams

Yellow House:    Leader - Analese Fon
                            Deputy - Max Schneider

Red House:          Leader - Ben Price
                             Deputy - Zak Richardson-Hall

Green House:       Leader - Bethan Thomas
                             Deputy - Cameron Jones

Congratulations to all the House Leaders and Deputies.  You will do a fantastic job of leading Mapua School in 2013.

Try Hard for the Try-athlon

This year's Try-athlon has been and gone, and it was great!

Friday the 1st of March was when Mapua School gathered on the field and ran, swum and biked hardcore. Although exhausted, everyone enjoyed themselves and got a great amount of points for their houses.

The place getters of the year eight boys were Jake in third, Ben in second, and Cameron in first. For the girls it was Kate in third, Catherine in second, and Analese in first.

The places for the houses were in fourth was Green House, in third was Red House, in second was Yellow House and that leaves Blue House for first place!

This years Try-athlon was a day to remember and everyone is already excited for next year!

Swim till you Win!

Recently, on Friday the 15th of February, the year fives, sixes, sevens, and eights went out to Riwaka School for 2013’s Swimming Sports!

The Mapua School swimming sports takes place every year in term one.  In this event, kids compete in races of freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, and for those who can, the butterfly demonstration.

This is a house event, so everyone gets creative in the ways to show off their house colours.  One of the biggest races is the house relay. This is where one year eight, one year seven, one six, and one five from each house do all swimming styles in one race against the other houses which earns you a lot of house points.

The second biggest race is the ‘Carry the Teacher race’ where four of the strongest of the year eights carry their house teacher on a chair from one end of the pool to the other! In last place was yellow house, third place blue house, second place green house... and that leaves red for first place, BUT red house cheated by pulling along the edge of the pool- so that leaves green house first for that race!

The winning house of the swimming sports this year was red house, amazingly in second place was yellow house, in third place was blue, and in last was green house.

House Leader Interviews - Round One!

Congratulations to everyone who came along to be interviewed for Red House and Yellow House today.

We had the first day of interviews for house leaders  today.  The students presented themselves with pride and maturity.  They answered difficult questions with integrity and thought.

I was an extremely proud teacher throughout both interviews.  Staff have an extraordinarily hard task in front of them to select the leaders.

Well done everyone - I can't wait to hear from Blue House and Green House tomorrow.

And - Round Two

Blue House and Green house ensured the standard remained high with their interviews on Tuesday.  This is going to be a very difficult decision for people to make.
